A Dream That Waited for the Right Time

Some dreams stay with us for years, quietly waiting for the perfect moment to become reality. For me, the Everest Base Camp Trek was one of those dreams.

I live in Melbourne, Australia, with my husband Raj and our daughter Summer. Over the years, I've explored some incredible hiking trails across Victoria, including Mount Bogong, Razorback Ridge, and Mount Abrupt. Every trek strengthened my love for the outdoors and taught me something new. But no matter how many mountains I climbed, one destination always remained at the top of my bucket list—Everest Base Camp.

Perhaps that dream started much earlier than I realised. My family comes from Uttarakhand, a place where the Himalayas are woven into everyday life. Growing up, I often heard stories about these magnificent mountains, their beauty, and the unforgettable experiences they offered. Those stories stayed with me, and over time, they inspired a dream of standing at the foot of the world's highest peak.

Like many dreams, this one didn't happen immediately. Life became busy with work and family responsibilities, and then the pandemic delayed travel plans across the world. Although the journey had to wait, the excitement never faded. I knew that one day I would finally make it there.

That opportunity arrived in October 2023.

Preparing for the Adventure

The Everest Base Camp Trek isn't just another holiday. It requires planning, physical preparation, and the right mindset.

Several months before the trek, I started focusing on my fitness. Regular F45 workouts, long walks, and endurance training became part of my routine. My goal wasn't to finish first or move the fastest; I simply wanted to enjoy the journey and be physically prepared for the challenges that come with trekking at high altitude.

At the same time, my friends Niloy and Ashish in India were getting ready for the expedition as well. We spent weeks discussing equipment, clothing, weather conditions, and everything we would need for the adventure ahead.

Choosing the right trekking organiser was another important decision. After researching different options, we decided to join TrekNomads. Their well-planned itineraries, experienced trek leaders, and strong emphasis on safety gave us the confidence that we were in good hands. For a trek as demanding as Everest Base Camp, travelling with an experienced team brings a great sense of reassurance.

Once our flights were booked and our backpacks were packed, the excitement became very real. After years of waiting, the journey was finally about to begin.

First Impressions of Nepal

Landing in Kathmandu felt like the official beginning of an adventure I had imagined for years.

The city was full of life. Colourful prayer flags fluttered above busy streets, trekking shops displayed every piece of gear imaginable, and travellers from around the world gathered in cafés, sharing stories about mountains they had climbed and adventures still waiting ahead. Everywhere we looked, there was a feeling of excitement.

Before beginning the trek, we spent a few days exploring Kathmandu and Pokhara. It was the perfect opportunity to experience Nepal's culture, enjoy the local food, and prepare mentally for the days ahead.

On 7 October, we finally met the rest of our TrekNomads group. Although everyone came from different places and backgrounds, we all shared the same goal—to reach Everest Base Camp. Conversations started easily, and within a short time, strangers became friends connected by a shared passion for adventure.

Little did we know that the mountains already had their own plans for us.

When the Mountains Had Different Plans

The original plan was simple. We would travel to Ramechhap, board our flight to Lukla, and officially begin the trek.

Instead, the weather had other ideas.

Heavy clouds grounded flights, leaving hundreds of trekkers waiting for the skies to clear. At first, it was disappointing. After months of preparation, we were eager to start walking, but the mountains reminded us that patience is just as important as determination.

Looking back, that unexpected delay turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of the journey.

Our group spent time together in a cosy homestay, sharing travel stories, laughing over cups of tea, and getting to know one another. Those extra hours helped us build friendships long before we stepped onto the trail. What began as a delay gradually became the foundation of the incredible team spirit that would carry us through the trek.

Eventually, an alternative arrangement was made. Instead of waiting any longer, we boarded a helicopter to Surke, a small village near Lukla. As we flew over deep valleys, rushing rivers, and towering snow-covered peaks, every bit of disappointment disappeared. The views from above were breathtaking, and the excitement returned stronger than ever.

At that moment, it finally felt real. We were on our way to Everest.

The Journey Finally Begins

Our first day of trekking didn't begin under clear blue skies. By the time we reached Surke, daylight was beginning to fade, and light rain had made the trails slippery. The sound of the Dudh Koshi River echoed through the valley as we carefully followed the mountain path towards Phakding.

Although it wasn't the easy start we had imagined, it became a reminder that the best adventures rarely go exactly as planned. Every step through the forests, every suspension bridge we crossed, and every small mountain village we passed brought us closer to a dream that had been years in the making.

By the time we reached our tea house in Phakding, tired but excited, I realised that the hardest part wasn't the climb—it was waiting all those years to finally begin.

As I looked out at the peaceful mountains that evening, I knew this was only the start of an unforgettable journey. Ahead of us lay Namche Bazaar, higher altitudes, breathtaking landscapes, and the adventure we had all travelled so far to experience.

Walking Through the Khumbu Valley

The following morning, we left Phakding with renewed energy, ready to take on the trail to Namche Bazaar. This stretch of the Everest Base Camp Trek is often described as one of the most memorable, and it didn't take long to understand why.

The trail followed the Dudh Koshi River, crossing several suspension bridges decorated with colourful prayer flags that fluttered in the cool mountain breeze. Looking down at the rushing glacial water while standing on those bridges was both thrilling and humbling. Around every bend, the scenery seemed to change. Dense pine forests, cascading waterfalls, and traditional Sherpa villages reminded us that the journey was just as beautiful as the destination itself.

The climb to Namche Bazaar tested our endurance. The steep uphill sections demanded patience, and every short break offered another excuse to admire the surrounding peaks. Then came a moment none of us will ever forget. Through the clouds, we caught our first distant glimpse of Mount Everest. It wasn't the dramatic close-up we had imagined, but seeing the world's highest peak for the very first time filled us with excitement. After years of dreaming about this trek, Everest was finally in sight.

Nestled like a natural amphitheatre in the mountains, Namche Bazaar was unlike any place I had visited before. Often called the gateway to Everest, the bustling Sherpa town was full of cosy cafés, bakeries, trekking shops, and smiling faces from around the world. Despite its remote location, it had a warm and welcoming atmosphere that made us feel at home almost instantly.

Learning to Slow Down

One of the biggest lessons the Himalayas teach is that reaching your destination isn't about moving quickly—it's about moving wisely.

To help our bodies adjust to the altitude, we spent an acclimatisation day in Namche Bazaar. Rather than resting indoors, we hiked to the famous Everest View Hotel, one of the highest luxury hotels in the world. The climb itself was demanding, but every step was rewarded with breathtaking views.

Standing there, surrounded by towering Himalayan giants like Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Nuptse, it finally sank in that we were walking through one of the most extraordinary mountain ranges on Earth.

The extra day also allowed us to experience Sherpa culture, visit local markets, and enjoy conversations with fellow trekkers from different parts of the world. Although everyone had their own reasons for coming to Everest, we all shared the same excitement and respect for the mountains.

From that point onwards, our group had become much more than fellow travellers. We had become a team.

Higher Into the Himalayas

Leaving Namche behind, the landscape gradually began to change.

The forests slowly gave way to open valleys, rugged cliffs, and snow-covered peaks that seemed to grow larger with every passing day. The trail towards Tengboche offered some of the most spectacular views of the entire trek, with the iconic Ama Dablam dominating the skyline.

Reaching Tengboche Monastery was another unforgettable experience. Surrounded by towering mountains, the peaceful monastery felt like a place where time had slowed down. Watching the monks perform their evening prayers while prayer flags fluttered gently outside created a moment of calm that none of us expected but everyone appreciated.

As we continued towards Dingboche, breathing became noticeably harder. Even simple conversations while walking required extra effort. The thinner air constantly reminded us that we were trekking above 4,000 metres, where every step demanded patience and determination.

At Dingboche, we spent another acclimatisation day by hiking to Nangkartshang Peak. Although the climb was physically challenging, the reward at the summit was incredible. Looking across the vast Himalayan landscape, we could see Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, and countless snow-covered peaks stretching towards the horizon. It was one of those moments that photographs could never fully capture.

Every Step Became a Challenge

Beyond Dingboche, the trail became quieter and more dramatic.

Vegetation almost disappeared, replaced by rocky terrain, glacial moraines, and towering cliffs shaped by centuries of wind and ice. Walking became slower as the altitude increased. Even carrying a light backpack felt noticeably heavier, and we learned to listen carefully to our bodies.

Our experienced TrekNomads guides constantly reminded us to stay hydrated, walk at a comfortable pace, and never rush. Their calm encouragement helped everyone remain positive, even during the toughest sections of the trail.

By the time we reached Lobuche, excitement had replaced exhaustion. We all knew that Everest Base Camp was now within reach.

A Dream Finally Becomes Reality

The morning we left for Gorak Shep felt different.

Everyone walked with quiet determination, knowing we were only a few hours away from achieving something we had dreamed about for years. After a short rest at Gorak Shep, we began the final walk towards Everest Base Camp.

The trail across the Khumbu Glacier was unlike anything I had experienced before. Large boulders, uneven terrain, and icy winds made every step feel earned. Yet no one complained. The anticipation of reaching our destination kept us moving forward.

Then, almost suddenly, the colourful prayer flags and the famous Everest Base Camp marker came into view.

For a few moments, nobody spoke.

There were smiles, hugs, photographs, and quiet tears of happiness. Standing at Everest Base Camp wasn't just about reaching a famous destination. It represented months of preparation, years of dreaming, and the determination to keep moving forward despite every challenge along the way.

Although Mount Everest itself isn't visible from Base Camp, simply standing there, surrounded by the Khumbu Glacier and some of the highest peaks on Earth, was an experience beyond words.

It was a moment I'll treasure forever.

Watching the Sun Rise Over Everest

The adventure wasn't quite over.

Before sunrise the next morning, we made our way to Kala Patthar, the highest point of our trek at 5,545 metres. Walking in the freezing darkness was one of the toughest parts of the entire journey, but reaching the summit just before dawn made every difficult step worthwhile.

As the first rays of sunlight touched the summit of Everest, the entire Himalayan range slowly lit up in shades of gold and orange. It was the closest we would come to the world's highest peak, and without doubt, one of the most beautiful sights I have ever witnessed.

No photograph can truly capture that feeling. Some moments are simply meant to be experienced.

More Than Just Reaching Everest

Looking back, I realised that the Everest Base Camp Trek gave me much more than spectacular views.

It introduced me to incredible people, unforgettable friendships, and a deeper appreciation for nature and perseverance. Our TrekNomads team supported one another through every challenge, celebrated every milestone, and laughed together during the toughest days. By the end of the journey, we were no longer strangers brought together by a trekking company—we had become lifelong friends connected by an extraordinary experience.

The Himalayas have a unique way of reminding you that life's greatest achievements rarely come easily. They require patience, resilience, and the courage to keep moving, one step at a time.

Final Thoughts

Completing the Everest Base Camp Trek wasn't simply about standing beneath the world's highest peak. It was about believing in a dream, embracing uncertainty, and discovering just how much is possible when you challenge yourself.

If you're thinking about trekking to Everest Base Camp, prepare yourself for more than just breathtaking landscapes. You'll experience remarkable hospitality, lifelong friendships, and moments that stay with you long after the journey ends.

For me, Everest was never just a destination. It became a reminder that some dreams are worth waiting for—and every single step along the way made the journey unforgettable.
