For trekkers, mountains are where the terrain starts to become more varied. Steep slopes, ridges, passes, rocky sections, and high-altitude terrain can all become part of the journey.
A plateau is an elevated area of land with a relatively flat or gently rolling surface compared with the surrounding terrain. It can form through processes such as tectonic uplift, volcanic activity, and erosion.

A gorge is a narrow, steep-sided passage or valley, often associated with erosion by a river or stream. Compared with a broad valley, a gorge can feel much more enclosed, with rock walls rising closely on either side.
On a trek, a gorge can mean a narrower trail, steeper surroundings, and sections where the landscape feels considerably more enclosed.

Erosion doesn't always create enormous valleys and canyons. Sometimes it produces much smaller features that you can easily spot along a trail.
A ravine is a narrow, steep-sided valley or channel, commonly formed or deepened by running water. The exact use of the term varies, but ravines are generally smaller and less extensive than major valleys or canyons.
You may notice ravines cutting through hillsides, particularly in areas where seasonal rainfall and runoff have repeatedly eroded the ground.
A gully is a channel or groove formed when running water concentrates on a slope and removes soil or loose material. Gullies can start relatively small and become deeper or wider as erosion continues.
After periods of heavy rainfall, existing gullies may become more pronounced as additional runoff moves through them.
A butte is an isolated, steep-sided landform with a relatively flat top. It forms when erosion removes the softer surrounding rock while a more resistant layer remains standing.
Buttes are particularly striking because they stand apart from the surrounding landscape, often looking almost like natural towers with flat tops.

These terms are especially useful for trekkers and mountaineers because they describe features that often influence the route itself.
A mountain pass is a natural gap or route through a mountain range or ridge. It provides a way to travel from one side of a mountain system to another and can connect neighbouring valleys or regions.
For centuries, mountain passes have been used by local communities, traders, pilgrims, and travellers. Today, many have become major trekking highlights.

The summit is the highest point of a mountain or peak. For many trekkers and mountaineers, it is the main objective of the journey.
Reaching a summit isn't simply about standing at the highest point. It represents the combined effort of training, acclimatisation, route planning, and the hours spent moving through changing terrain.
Whether you're climbing Friendship Peak at 5,289 metres or taking on a summit trek in Kilimanjaro, the final ascent is often the moment when everything you've experienced along the route comes together.

A trek rarely involves just one type of landform. You might begin the morning walking through a valley, climb a steep slope toward a ridge, cross a high pass, and descend into another valley later in the day.
