Overview

The Island Peak Expedition (6,189m), also known as Imja Tse, is a challenging climbing adventure in Nepal's Everest region that combines high-altitude trekking with technical mountaineering. The journey takes you from Lukla through well-known Himalayan settlements such as Namche Bazaar, Dingboche and Chhukung before reaching Island Peak Base Camp. Along the way, you get views of some of the region's most impressive mountains, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu and Ama Dablam.

This 18 Nights and 19 days Island Peak Expedition takes you through changing landscapes, from forests and alpine valleys to rocky moraines, steep trails and icy terrain. The final ascent involves ropes and crampons, making basic mountaineering skills an important part of the climb. With acclimatisation days at Namche Bazaar and Chhukung, along with an additional summit day for weather contingencies, the expedition is designed for trekkers who want to take their first serious step into high-altitude climbing.

What Makes Island Peak a Great Climbing Adventure?

Gateway to High-Altitude Climbing:
The Island Peak Expedition in Nepal is a good stepping stone for trekkers who want to develop their mountaineering experience. The climb introduces you to essential skills such as using crampons, ropes and ice axes while taking you to a summit at 6,189m.

Breathtaking Himalayan Views:
The journey offers impressive views throughout the Island Peak expedition, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu and Ama Dablam. As you move towards the base camp and summit, the surrounding Himalayan peaks become an important part of the experience.

Experience Sherpa Culture:
The route passes through traditional Sherpa settlements such as Namche Bazaar, Dingboche and Chhukung. You also pass Tengboche Monastery and experience the mountain communities and landscapes of the Everest region along the way.

Physical and Mental Challenge:
An Island Peak climb demands both physical preparation and mental determination. The expedition includes long trekking days, increasing altitude and a technical summit ascent involving ropes and crampons. TrekNomads requires participants to have successfully completed a 5,000m trek and meet one of the specified fitness criteria before registering.

Thrilling Adventure with Safety:
The expedition includes structured acclimatisation, experienced guides and a dedicated extra day for a summit attempt in case weather conditions affect the planned climb. The route does involve inherent high-altitude and technical climbing risks, so trekkers are expected to follow the instructions of their guides and meet the required medical and fitness requirements.

Terrain and Weather Overview for Island Peak Expedition:

On the Island Peak Expedition, trekkers will experience a range of terrains, from lush valleys and alpine meadows at lower altitudes to rugged, rocky paths and icy trails as you ascend. As you gain elevation, expect colder temperatures and the possibility of snow, especially near the summit. The views of towering Himalayan peaks such as Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam are stunning, providing constant motivation. The terrain becomes increasingly challenging as you approach the summit, requiring technical climbing skills and proper gear for steep, icy sections.

Island Peak Expedition Gradient:

The Island Peak Expedition offers a varied gradient that takes trekkers from lush lowland villages to rugged high-altitude environments. The trek begins with a moderate ascent through the Everest region's Sherpa villages, forests, and rivers. As you gain altitude, the terrain becomes more alpine, with steeper inclines and rocky paths leading to high camps. The summit push includes a technical ascent with icy slopes and crevasses, requiring the use of ropes and crampons. Island Peak’s gradient is both challenging and rewarding for trekking enthusiasts and aspiring climbers.

Trek Insurance:

Trekking in the Himalayas comes with inherent risks, and weather and trail conditions can change unexpectedly. TrekNomads does not provide trek or travel insurance as part of the package. Trekkers are responsible for arranging suitable insurance through an external insurance provider or authorised agent before the trek. We strongly recommend choosing a policy that covers high-altitude trekking, medical emergencies, Heli evacuation, and trip-related risks.

Risk and Liability:

The Island Peak Expedition involves trekking and climbing in remote high-altitude areas with inherent risks, including altitude sickness, variable weather, and technical climbing challenges. TrekNomads prioritizes safety, employing experienced guides and first aid measures, but participants must accept personal responsibility for their health and safety. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies, evacuation, and cancellations is mandatory. While TrekNomads aims for a secure expedition, participants must acknowledge the inherent risks and adhere to all safety protocols and guide instructions to ensure a safe ascent.

  • Do carry out a no-litter policy: Trekkers must bring back any waste created during the expedition.
