Black Peak Expedition Overview

Black Peak, also known as Kala Nag or Black Cobra, is the highest and most iconic mountain in the Bandarpunch (Saraswati) range in the Garhwal Himalayas. Standing tall at 6,387 meters (20,955 feet), it presents one of the most challenging climbs, requiring advanced climbing skills and high-altitude trekking experience. The unique shape of Black Peak resembling a cobra's head adds to its enigmatic allure, making it highly regarded among mountaineers seeking a thrilling adventure.

Black Peak has a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century when it was first attempted by British mountaineers. It was later successfully climbed by an Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) team in 1979. Since then, it has been a popular destination for mountaineers from around the world, attracting adventurers with its rugged terrain and breathtaking views.

According to local folklore, Black Peak holds a significant mythological significance in the region. It is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva, one of the most revered gods in Hindu mythology. The peak is also believed to be guarded by the mountain deities who protect the surrounding area.

The expedition to Black Peak takes trekkers through the pristine landscapes of the Govind National Park. This national park is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, offering a unique experience for nature lovers. The trail passes through alpine meadows, pine forests, moraine ridges, boulders, and glacial basins, showcasing breathtaking beauty at every turn. Trekkers will traverse crevassed snowfields, lush green meadows, glaciers, thick forests, scattered streams, and miles of rocky moraines, providing a diverse and captivating trekking experience.

The Black Peak expedition is not for the faint-hearted, as it offers a demanding terrain that requires advanced climbing skills and experience in high-altitude trekking. The steep ascents, perilous passages, and rugged terrain make it a challenging climb, pushing mountaineers to their limits. However, the sense of accomplishment upon conquering the summit of Black Peak is unparalleled, making it a highly rewarding adventure for seasoned mountaineers seeking to level up their skills.

Day 1: From Dehradun to Sankri

From Dehradun, we’ll travel to Sankri very early in the morning. You may eat your breakfast at Kempty Fall, which is a popular picnic location with a waterfall. At Purola, stop for lunch in the middle of your tour. It’s a gorgeous trip to Sankri, you’ll get beautiful views from your window as you pass through Dehradun, Mussoorie, Nainbagh, Damta, Newman, Purola, Mori, and Netwar. Sankri is a small town with wooden huts serving delightful cuisine. It welcomes you to a view of snow-capped mountains, pollution-free air, and a rejuvenating atmosphere.

Day 2: From Sankri to Taluka drive and trek to Osla

After breakfast, take a cab to Taluka, which is 11 km from Sankri. There are few concrete dwellings and motels in this little hamlet. The walk begins from Taluka and leads to Osla. Pass through lush forests dotted with walnut trees, with vistas of Himalayan villages ahead. After a moderate elevation, you will arrive at Osla village, the largest settlement of the region known for its culture. The villagers worship Duryodhana at a temple dedicated to him. After erecting your tents and exploring this charming location, relax for the night.

Day 3: From Osla to Ruinsara Lake

Early in the morning, after breakfast, trek towards Ruinsara, a glacier lake revered by the people for the purity of its waters.

Day 4: From Ruinsara Lake to Kyarkoti (Base Camp)

Make a wish at Ruinsara Lake and then travel to Kyarkoti (Base Camp). The sight of Black Peak from here is enough to fuel you for the days ahead. Set up your tents and settle in for the day at Kyarkoti, a meadow surrounded by mountains and pebbles.

Day 5: Load Ferry

Take the ferry, your essential gear & clothing required for the summit push, from Base Camp to Advance Base Camp. It’s a fair bit of altitude gain from Base Camp to Advanced Base Camp but also a good trial run to get accustomed to the slopes and terrain of the peak. Trek back to Base Camp. Stay the night there.

Day 6: From Base Camp to Advance Base Camp

Follow the same route from Base Camp to ABC that you did yesterday – through moraines, glaciers, and ice. You will start to realize that everything seems easier the second time around. Overnight at the Advance Base Camp.

Day 7: From Advance Base Camp (ABC) to Camp 1

Load the ferry from ABC to Camp 1. With a majestic view of Swargarohini to the North and Bandarpooch to the south, we have now reached a terrain rich in hidden and open crevasses. Return to Advance Base Camp after setting up Camp 1.

Day 8: From ABC to Camp 1

Continue on the same way you took yesterday. The journey from ABC to Camp 1.

Day 9: From Camp 1 to Summit Camp

The ascent from Camp 1 to Summit Camp is difficult. You will reach the campground, which is at a height of 5500m, after 3-4 hours, and get to witness the magical view of Black Peak. Retire early after pitching the tents.

Day 10: Day of Summit attempt

After analyzing the weather and trail conditions, start early after midnight. Hence, one immediate challenge is the night cold and the violent winds of the altitude. furthermore, the ice remains strong and firm in the morning, making walking on it easier. The summit climb is fairly challenging and involves navigating vertical ice walls of a gradient between 70-75 degrees with a height of 75-85 feet. These sections will require the use of fixed ropes and jumars to climb until we make it to the ridgeline. The height of Black Peak (Kala Nag) is 6387 meters, and the ascent is hard. Traversing the summit will leave you feeling satisfied with a sense of achievement. After clicking a few pictures and spending a short time there, return to Summit camp.
