Over three days of walking, you travel from a town at 1,550 m beside the road to a monastery village at 3,870 m, with a 7,227 m rock-and-ice face rising ahead. No other big-mountain valley is this close to Kathmandu. That pull is why the Langtang Valley trek keeps drawing people, even in a year when its road broke.

We wrote this Langtang Valley trek guide for 2026–27 to give you what a planner needs: daily distances, costs in rupees, permit fees, and whether you can reach the trailhead right now. We also tell you where the plan is tight, because you should hear it from us before your lungs tell you on Day 4.

The trek is graded Moderate, and most fit first-timers finish it. One day is much harder than the rest, though, and the road changes by the week. Read on, and you will know what to expect before you pay a rupee.

Is the Langtang Valley Trek Open? Road Status After the 2026 Rasuwa Flood

The trail is reported intact, but the road to the usual trailhead is the problem. A flood on 26 August 2026 ran down the Bhote Koshi into the Trishuli and damaged the corridor to Syabrubesi. The Langtang valley is in a separate gorge, and TAAN reported the upper valley safe.

Reports disagree on the present state. Some operators say the Kathmandu–Dhunche road has reopened and they now start from Thulo Syabru by 4WD jeep. Others noted on 1–2 October that the road still stopped short of Syabrubesi, and no official reopening date existed.

This road has formed. A July 2025 flood took out the Miteri bridge on the Syabrubesi–Rasuwagadhi road, and a permanent replacement only arrived that December. Treat the road as Langtang's single weak point, and ask every operator for a Plan B start.

Our advice: Reconfirm road conditions two to three weeks before you fly, and check the Kathmandu Post and Onlinekhabar instead of trusting one blog. Not sure what your dates mean? Message our team.

Langtang Valley Trek

Why Langtang Works as a Short Himalayan Trek, and Who Should Skip It?

Langtang gives you three things most short treks don't. The first is scale: Langtang Lirung (7,227 m), Dorje Lakpa (6,966 m), and Langshisha Ri (6,810 m) fill the sky from Day 4.

The second is culture. This is Tamang country, with Tibetan Buddhist prayer walls, a working monastery at Kyanjin Gompa, and a village cheese factory that makes yak cheese. If monasteries pull you more than summits, browse our spiritual treks too.

The third is the story. The 2015 earthquake devastated Langtang Village, and the community rebuilt it. You walk through that recovery, and the lodge owners will tell you their side if you ask.

Skip Langtang if you expect Wi-Fi and hot showers at every stop, can't walk 6–8 hours with a day pack, or want to cross a high pass. We'd rather lose a booking than send you up the wrong trek.

Days 3–4: Forest, river and a long climb

You follow the Langtang Khola through oak, bamboo and rhododendron forest, crossing suspension bridges as you go. There is a long walk before Lama Hotel, where your legs first complain, so settle into a slow, steady rhythm. On Day 4, the valley widens, and the first big snow peaks appear.

Tea Houses of Lama Hotel

Day 5: Kyanjin Gompa, and why you arrive early

The walk is short, so you reach Kyanjin by lunchtime. Spend the afternoon at the monastery and the cheese factory, then sleep early. Tomorrow starts in the dark.

Day 6: Start time, turnaround time and the long walk down

Most guides leave between 4 and 5 am with headlamps. Your guide sets a hard turnaround time, usually late morning, because cloud builds in the afternoon. Poles save your knees on the descent to Lama Hotel. This is the day "Moderate" stops feeling moderate.

Days 7–8: The knee-testing descent

Day 7 is downhill through the forest you climbed, and every step lands on your knees. Day 8 is the drive home, so pack a book for the jeep.

Langtang Valley Trek Cost: 2026 Prices and Inclusions

Budget operators quote roughly US$ 440–690 for the Langtang Valley trek, standard packages sit around US$550, and luxury ones pass US$1,150.

Our Premium price lands above the budget quotes and well below luxury. Here is what it buys:

Included

  • Private jeep from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi and back
  • 2 nights in a 4-star Kathmandu hotel and 6 nights in premium teahouses, with attached bathrooms where available
  • Three meals, three rounds of tea or coffee, and 2 litres of water a day on the trail
  • A government-licensed guide, an assistant guide, and 1 porter for every 2 trekkers (10–12 kg each)
  • Permits, taxes, a Kathmandu sightseeing day, a welcome dinner, and a 3-litre emergency oxygen cylinder (charged only if used)

Not included: International flights, travel insurance, lunch and dinner in Kathmandu, soft drinks, hot showers or boiled water on the trail, tips (about US$10 per person per day) and helicopter or evacuation costs.

When you compare quotes, ask three things:

  • Is the road leg a private jeep or a public bus?
  • Do you get a private twin room with an attached bathroom?
  • How many groups does your guide handle at once?

Cheap quotes usually cut corners on exactly these.

Langtang Valley Trek Permits 2026: National Park Entry and Who Pays What

A Langtang National Park entry permit is required, and we arrange it for you.

Permit

  Foreign nationals

  SAARC (including India)

   Nepali citizens

National park entry

   NPR 3,000

   NPR 1,500

    NPR 100

Sources don't fully agree. Some add 13% VAT to the park permit. Check the latest fees with the Nepal Tourism Board before you travel.

Permits are issued in Kathmandu, Dhunche and Syabrubesi, and checked at the park entrance and along the route. Carry passport copies and a few passport photos.

Teahouse Life on the Langtang Valley Trek: Rooms, Food, Water and Charging

Expect simple twin rooms with wooden walls and thin mattresses. Lama Hotel is a cluster of forest lodges, and Kyanjin Gompa has the widest choice of rooms. After dark, the dining-room stove is the only warm place, so sleep in your layers.

Menus are open and cover dal bhat, momo, noodles, and yak cheese dishes. Order your next meal when you arrive, because kitchens cook one pot at a time.

Bottled water gets pricier with every 500 m, so carry purification tablets for refills. Charging costs extra in most teahouses, which makes a power bank the cheaper option.

How Hard Is the Langtang Valley Trek? Fitness, Altitude and What Actually Hurts

We grade it Moderate, and that's fair if you're fit. To register with us, you need to meet one of these: a 5K run in 35 minutes, a 10 km cycle in 40 minutes, a 1 km swim in 40 minutes, or 50 floors of stairs in 30 minutes. Send proof to your Trek Captain within 30 days of departure.

Not sure you'd pass? Our free Mountain Fit Assessment Program gives you a personal training plan. For a deeper look at the trail, read our Langtang trek difficulty breakdown.

Where is this plan tight?

You sleep at 2,380 m on Day 3, then at 3,430 m on Day 4. That's a gain of about 1,050 m, and common high-altitude guidance is to keep sleeping gains above 3,000 m to roughly 300–500 m a day.

We manage it with a slow pace, a short Day 5, and a climb-high, sleep-low summit day. Your guide checks on you every day, too.

Watch for a headache with nausea. If it doesn't ease with rest and water, you stop climbing, and your guide may send you down.

What hurts most isn't the altitude. It's the knees on Day 7, the cold nights, and the appetite you lose at 3,800 m. Eat anyway, sip water all day, and tell your guide how you feel early.

What to Pack for the Langtang Valley Trek: A Short Checklist

  • Layers: Thermal base, fleece, down jacket and waterproof shell
  • Feet: Broken-in boots and three pairs of wool socks
  • Head and hands: Sun hat, warm beanie, gloves, and sunglasses
  • Sleep: A sleeping-bag liner, since blanket quality varies
  • Tools: Trekking poles, a headlamp for Day 6, and a power bank

Porters carry your main bag, so you only need a day pack. Your booking also comes with a 15% coupon on Gokyo Trek Apparel and Gear.

Getting to Langtang: Kathmandu to the Trailhead and Back

The road day is the part most likely to change, so build slack around it.

A private jeep beats a public bus on this road, and leaving Kathmandu around 6 am keeps a landslide delay from eating your evening. Fly in a day early if you can, and never book a same-day flight home on Day 9.

Langtang Valley Trek FAQs

Do Indian citizens need a visa for the Langtang Valley trek?

No. Indians can enter Nepal without a visa. Carry your passport or voter ID, and confirm the accepted ID with us before you fly.

What happens to my Langtang Valley trek booking if the road is closed?

Landslides and floods can shut the road. Read our cancellation policy, then message us two to three weeks out to discuss a new start point or date.

Can a first-timer do the Langtang Valley trek?

Yes, if you're fit. Start eight weeks out with four stair or hill sessions a week and one long weekend walk. Test yourself first on one of our weekend treks.

Will my phone work on the trail?

An Ncell SIM gets good coverage in the region. Teahouse Wi-Fi is prepaid and costly, so download offline maps and warn your family that you'll go quiet at times.

What travel insurance do I need?

We don't sell insurance. Buy a policy before you fly that covers trekking to 5,000 m, helicopter evacuation, and trip cancellation.

How much cash should I carry?

Nepali rupees, withdrawn in Kathmandu, since ATMs don't follow you up the valley. Budget for snacks, showers, charging, and drinks, and ask your Trek Captain for a realistic figure.

Can I add Yala Peak (5,520 m) to my trip?

Yala is a separate climb that needs extra days, a guide with climbing experience, and some basic mountaineering skills. It isn't part of our Premium plan, so ask us about a custom itinerary.

Will I see a red panda?

They live in the forests here, but sightings are rare. You're more likely to spot Himalayan thar and birds, especially on quiet early mornings.

Is the Langtang Valley trek suitable for solo travellers?

Yes. Our group departures take 4 to 12 trekkers, and most strangers feel like a team by Day 3. Rooms are twin-sharing, so ask us about a single room.
